When that depletes, it reverts to conventional gas-electric hybrid operation, self-charging the hybrid battery with regenerative braking. When the lithium-ion battery is charged after plugging the vehicle in, it provides up to 53 kilometres of electric-only driving. On its own, the engine makes 312 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, but combined with the electric hybrid motor, the system makes a combined 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. The XC90 Recharge uses a turbocharged 2.0L engine with hybrid system. A 247-horsepower B5 mild-hybrid system is available to U.S. The engine makes 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, and the mild hybrid’s integrated starter-generator adds an additional fuel-free 13 horsepower. Known as B6, the powertrain also includes a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The 2023 XC90 uses a 2.0L supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine – the supercharger providing boost at lower rpms, and the turbocharger kicking in its power at higher rpms. In keeping with other Volvo models, the XC90 drops its Momentum and Inscription trim names, and offers Core, Plus and Ultimate trims. The 2023 XC90 also adds standard Google Built-In to its infotainment system.
The other choice is the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which previously came with two battery sizes, but now comes in a single longer-range offering. The XC90 now comes with a mild hybrid system. For 2023, Volvo’s largest SUV gets a powertrain overhaul, with the previous three choices trimmed down to two.
